Humans have used CBD to treat a variety of illnesses for millennia. But we’re not the only ones who can harness its power. Pet CBD is a relatively new phenomenon that may be able to help our furry companions stay healthy. Below, we’ll cover everything you need to know about pet CBD.
CBD: What is It?
CBD is a member of a chemical family called cannabinoids. Along with THC, it’s one of the most abundant cannabinoids worldwide. Hemp plants contain some of the world’s highest concentrations of CBD.
In stark contrast to THC, CBD has no discernable psychoactive effects. It can be made from both hemp plants or cannabis plants, though you will only find CBD derived from cannabis plants at a dispensary. This CBD has been lab-tested, whereas there is no assurance that hemp-derived CBD has been tested since it is not held to as high of a standard. For this reason, we always recommend getting your CBD products from a reputable dispensary.
Can CBD Help My Pet?
Pet CBD could have a slew of potential benefits for pets.
Pets may be able to use CBD to address many of the same problems as humans. That’s because they both possess an endocannabinoid system (ECS). In fact, nearly every animal possesses an ECS. Some pet problems CBD may help include:
- Chronic or severe pain: If your pet suffers from a recurring injury, CBD may be able to help them overcome their pain.
- Inflammation: Swelling-related problems are a fact of life for all older animals. You may be able to help your furry friend relieve swelling from arthritis or other chronic inflammatory conditions using CBD.
- Anxiety or stress: Finally, CBD may be able to help your pet overcome anxiety. This can be a helpful tool when they have a long plane or car ride.
Just how sure are we that CBD can do these things? Below, we’ll explore some of the scientific data that supports this information.
Pet CBD Research
One recent veterinary study attempted to identify the effects of CBD on pets. In the study, researchers administered CBD to dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. They used two different dosages of CBD oil: 2 mg/kg and 8 mg/kg. Dogs received doses once every 12 hours for two weeks.
Researchers reported that their results were promising. They discovered that the half-life of CBD in the dogs’ bloodstream was about 4 hours. During that time, dogs exhibited significantly lowered pain response.
To determine these results, researchers asked pet owners to observe their pets and complete questionnaires. They also tested levels of certain chemicals in the pet’s blood.
It’s important to note that these results are still preliminary, though. While they are promising, we still need more research to confirm what this data shows. One thing’s for sure, though. CBD may hold huge promise for animals in the future.
